Just-a-Kid hits the Olympic Stage

The Powerade brand inspiring both national pride and individuality. In 2014, Coca-Cola reached out to its licensees hoping one of them could fulfill their latest personalization idea for its Powerade brand. None of them could. That was when they reached out to Strän. As experts in producing branded, personalized products, Strän had proven to be capable and resourceful. Soon following, Strän became an official licensee for Coca-Cola, won the business and took on carrying out the campaign. With that, the “Just-A-Kid from Somewhere” personalized apparel campaign was launched. Within ten months, Strän produced more than 37,000 Just-A-Kid apparel pieces for Powerade. As a result, both consumers and the internal marketing team at Coca-Cola could purchase the apparel and take pride in their hometowns while promoting the Powerade brand. Now, we flash forward two years to 2016 with the Olympic summer games fast approaching. It seems more appropriate to unite the USA team under one name instead of separating athletes and people into individual hometowns. No longer are we focused on where exactly everyone came from or started, but rather we hope to emphasize who we are and who we represent as a whole and as a team. Thus, Coca-Cola seeks to adapt the LeBron James phrase, “we’re all just a kid from somewhere” and begin the “Just-A-Kid from the USA” campaign in support of the 2016 Olympics.

At Coca-Cola’s request, Strän followed through again by executing and handling the logistics of this modified program. We are proud to help with this campaign especially because each purchase directly supports US Olympians, Paralympians, and Olympic hopefuls. The new idea and look is in line with the previous campaign, yet it is evidently newly inspired with the gold printing and replacement of hometown personalization with the more unified “USA”. Thus, Strän has ensured brand consistency while applying a refreshing and thematic update.

Together, the Just-A-Kid campaigns speak to the importance of both individuality and team identity. Both of the Powerade campaigns (the Just-A-Kid from Somewhere and the Just-A-Kid from the USA) are being carried out on the same e-Commerce site by Strän. While consumers and athletes can support their country for the upcoming games, they can still commemorate their humble beginnings with their hometown shirts as well. With the games almost here, it is evident that uniting under one team name, no matter individual stories, is both powerful and inspiring; and as Helen Keller once said, “alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much”.  At the same time, the fact that Americans and the US team come from such different backgrounds is what fosters the diversity that fuels our unique strength on the global stage. Phil Jackson’s quote, “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team,” captures this reciprocal value. In the grand scheme of it all and in national pride, “we’re all Just-A-Kid from the USA”. The Strän team wishes the best of luck to the entire US team over these next two weeks.
